Jurisprudence Formal study of the principles on which legal rules are based and the means by which judges guide their decision making. Probable cause A judicial finding that there exists reasonable grounds for belief that a person should be arrested or searched. Direct evidence Evidence in the form of testimony from a witness who actually saw, heard, or touched the subject of interrogation. Verdict The formal and unanimous decision or finding made by a jury. . Lis pendens A pending suit. Reasonable doubt What for what; something for something; giving one valuable thing for another. Guardian ad litem In Utah State Court proceedings, a lawyer appointed by a court to look after the interests of an infant, child or incompetent person during court proceedings. Quid pro quo To overthrow; vacate; to annul or void a summons, indictment, bindover order or subpoena.
